Journal #13 – Knowing God

Knowing God

If asked to explain how a person can claim ‘to know God’ how would you answer?

Knowing God is very much like knowing any other person, other than the fact you can’t physically see them, not even via Skype or FaceTime.

As Christians, we believe that the Bible is the living word of God, and so by reading the scriptures, we can know Him more, and by studying and understanding the Bible, we can grow in our understanding of who He is and learn about His Person.

Reading letters about and indeed, from God are a great way to understand who He is, but you can’t know Him fully until you also experience Him. You can;t really get to know a person just by reading and writing letters to each other. You can learn a lot, but without spending time with someone and ‘hanging out’ with them, you can never truly know them. They say you don’t truly know someone until you live with them.

It’s why we call it Faith. It takes a step of faith to experience God, and an openness to that experience to make the scriptures come alive.

In Revelation 12:11, it says:

11They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamband by the word of their testimony;

You cannot deny the word of someone’s testimony. Hearing other people’s experiences helps to build faith and encourage closer encounters with God. We also get to learn about His heart for mankind by hearing and seeing what He does for others.

By having faith in God, we also open up our minds to an understanding of human life that I would describe as the true ‘Enlightenment’. When you look at life through the eyes of faith in God and his heart for mankind, you see that it holds the hope and the future for mankind.
